The world is your oyster. You may have heard this from an over ambitious parent or your aunt who gives you lectures on how to live your life. Although this may be true for the older generations, for us as generation Z it has proved that coming out of our shells open up a whirlpool of anxiety and stress about global and controversial issues like terrorism, global warming and war.
The problem with a whole generation of stressed out children is pretty obvious: anxiety levels are heightened and performance levels drop. This will most likely cause more stress, lack of sleep and more anxiety. It's a viscous cycle.
Because most of Generation Z almost lives, eats and breathes social media, extra anxieties are at our finger tips. Social media is full of people sharing news on the latest crimes, terrorist attacks and people dishing out their (often inappropriate) commentary left, right and centre. Cyberbullying is a well known danger and a recent poll concluded that Twitter is the most psychologically destructive place on the internet, a place where Generation Z is free to search and discover post about the big, wide, worrying world.
Children learn about inequality very young, and the concept of crimes and violence are shoved in their face every time they consume some form of social media. It seems as though it is now the children, and not the parents, laying awake at night worrying about financials and the job market. Maybe they worry about anxiety, and about how much they worry, because why not add onto the pile of global anxiety that effects the (not so humble) 12 year old.
Nevertheless parents today are raising an army of confrontational, yet resiliant children, a generations of mostly prepubescent 'kiddies' who see the world as a total nightmare filled with war, career instability and the possibility for an approaching ice-age. Maybe it's time to switch off the news, because it seems the whole "good evening, we will now proceed to tell you why it's not" thing is getting old...
Until next time
