The ultimate designer basic has to be the Burberry Trench coat. You know the one - a light camel colour with the iconic Burberry print lining on the inside. Waterproof, durable and beautiful all wrapped into one garment. The Burberry coat was truly ground breaking during the era of its debut - it was Thomas Burberry, the founder of the designer label, who invented gabardine. This is the outer fabric which actually kept the wearer dry thanks to the waterproof weave of the material.
The gabardine was invented in 1879, however the iconic trench coat did not come to be until 1912, more than 30 years later! Thee distinctive trench coats were at the time purely for the function of keeping war officers, soldiers and other military members dry. The design was practical and every element was carefully thought out - from the epaulettes on the shoulders to display each man's army rank to the pleat at the back to allow ease of movement - especially during horse riding.
The coats were made in Castleford in England and still are today. It takes over 100 processes and approximately 3 weeks to make a single coat - ever wonder why they're so damn expensive? The coat originally came in the easily recognizable caramel colour, but today it comes in a variety of colors and even prints - but one thing will always stay the same - the iconic Burberry Check print lining the inside.
If you're looking to buy one, maybe you should be prepared for a hefty blow to your wallet. They start upwards of $1795 (USD). It's a lot of money for a coat - however it is a lifelong investment. You only need one coat for the rest of your life, this isn't something thats going to just break. There are of course lots of good coats out there that look very similar to the original iconic Burberrys, but if you're willing to drop some extra cash on the real deal, you certainly won't regret it.
From functional to fashionable the Burberry trench coat has remained an icon for over 100 years, and it will continue to do so for long into the future.
Until next time
