Love them or hate them, the Kar-Jenner family has created a social media... they are to social media and fashion what Rome was to the ancient world. Through their endless business ventures and public appearances they have carefully and effortlessly slipped into the world of fashion and the spotlight bounces off of their designer outfits and chunky diamond trinkets. So what is so special about their clothing? Well, it's the way they wear it. They have changed the way we perceive clothing forever. Don't believe me?
First, the iconic Kim K introduced us to bandage dresses, skirts and tops. then those sets came in. You know the ones I'm talking about, the nude or neutral skin tight skirt and matching crop top that make you look and feel like a goddess. The world had never considered a matching outfit in this light, and yet suddenly copies of these 'co-ordinates' popped up in every retailer imaginable, and they're still going strong today both in stores and on every 'famous' Instagammer's feed. Kim may have not designed these sets, but heritage sld them to the world.
Then Kourtney came along and showed us sweatpants. Not that we'd never seen sweatpants; we spend every Sunday afternoon lazing around in them but this was... different. No one had ever worn sweatpants with heels and coats or leather jackets successfully to look good in the get-up. But after the Kar-Jenner clan started wearing it, so did we. If you had told someone 5 years ago that sweatpants and stilettos would be a thing, they would have laughed in your face.
Khloe also made major waves in today's fashion industry. Body suits were seen as a thing of the 80's and no-one really bought them, and they were always hard to find. Now however, they're as easy to find as a plain white T. The Kardashians introduced this once forgotten closet item because they look great under jeans since there are no lumps and bumps like you'd have after tucking in a shirt. Speaking of jeans, those weird, cut off at the knee jeans that aren't really shorts or long pants... yeah you have this fam to thank for that. No one would have dared to cut off their jeans right at the knee, but along came American royalty to show us how to do it right. Oh and then of course Khloe made her own jeans, because she loves denim so much, and now the world can wear a pair of Good American blue jeans.
Kylie introduced the world to how to wear the 'walk of shame' look with the utmost of class. If you had said 'let's go out shopping in just a t-shirt and some sneakers' back in 2012 people would have thought you were off your rocker. But now this coveted style is called lamp shading: Wearing a super big t-shirt or sweatshirt with sneakers or boots (click here for a spot on lamp shading). Matte lipstick and super plump lips also became popular all over Instagram feeds (but thick lips have basically been beautiful since the dawn
Kendall showed us that freeing the nipple is both totally normal and can also be fashionable. She started stepping out in shirts that were sheer or ripped enough to show off her bralettes (or lack thereof) and in some instances she even ditched the shirt and just went bare in a bra... She undeniably started a nipple piercing craze too, after she readily revealed that she had gotten hers blinged up (and shortly after Kylie did the same). Although 'mom jeans' had been circulating Tumblr fashion pages for a little while before Kendall hit the fashion scene, she really showed us how to wear them effortlessly with every and any body suit, shirt or bra under the sun.
And who could ever forget that family photo from last year's Yeezy Season 3 fashion show? Ripped knitwear, beanies, fur coats, pearls, bling and all nude color palettes... and somehow they actually pulled it off. How did such s crazy ensemble pull together so effortlessly? Simple. It's the Kardashian Effect.
Until next Time
