Recently, the athleisure trend has made its way onto runways and swept its way into the closets of famous fashion bloggers and celebrity wardrobes. Luckily, this trend from the 80's has not come back to haunt us. And neon windbreakers with white New Balance 'dad shoes' won't sneak their way onto the catwalk anytime soon. This time around, athleisure is way more refined, neutral and luxurious, and the trend has matured into something that elegant models and business moguls alike take on.
To incorporate the trend into your wardrobe easily, it's best to start with shoes. Something like the Nike air max range or the Asics tiger Gel-Lytes are really comfortable and come in lots of different colour palettes- although I would suggest going with a neutral or light shoe to keep the attention on your outfit. It's proven that the first thing people look at when they see you is your feet - or more specifically your shoes, even if this is subconscious and if only for a split second. Don't worry - people will notice your fancy sneakers, so there's no need to draw more attention to them with a neon orange base and a green sole, but hey, if that's your thing go for it!
Another great piece to consider is the classic bomber jacket, but and upgraded version: A silky finish will instantly make you look a lot chicer and put together while the shape of the piece still gives your ensemble a sporty look.
I think it's also great to have a pair of long high rise compression tights in your wardrobe. You can wear them the same as you usually wear leggings, although they're a much better option because they're not see through, they won't give you a camel toe (if you find a good brand with the right fit) and they'll last a lot longer than your plain cotton leggings. Obviously, you can also wear them to and from the gym and they're good for winter because of the heat-trapping fabric. The spandex-like fabric will also hug you in all the right places, making you look amazing without even trying - no more of that annoying midday legging sag from stretched out cotton tights! I love this pair from Nike pro because of the graphic waistband, which adds a unique element.
Sweatshirts in the new athleisure trend are no longer plain and boring if you don't want them to be! If you want something with an uber cool print, look no further than the Adidas Originals range. This sweatshirt above is from the Rita Ora collection and I absolutely love it. The mostly neutral colour palette and soft prints contrast so well with the strong logo and strips and the whole thing is just so beautiful! Not only can sweatshirts and hoodies look amazing, they're the comfiest things you could ever wear, so if comfort is your thing this is for you!
Racerback and sleeveless crop tops worn with high waisted trousers or jogger pants immediately make your outfit look more activewear-inspired. The little tops are reminiscent of sports bras and you can find so many nice textures and prints to change up your look. You could even wear a racerback sports bra underneath a loose open strappy cami. These tiny tops will keep you feeling cool in summer and they're usually quite inexpensive, so you can stock up on a lot of them.
I hope you liked the article and I encourage you to incorporate some athleisure into you own wardrobe this season! Until the next post
