So this last week I spent in my holiday house near Hermanus with my best friend. Although I usually go often during the year, this is the first timeI have been there since last January because I have had such a busy school year.
My best friend was staying with her significant other, who also lives in Hermanus; so while I drove up with my parents, 3 irritable dogs and an unhappy cat; she met us there. My house there has no internet, and the cable is down at the moment, so it was a pretty technology free week; which wasn't too bad after all because most of the cafe´s in the area have free wifi. We lazed around for a while and unpacked. The second day, Tuesday we did the same. Lay in bed and lazed around. Tuesday night we went for a walk on Onrus beach and ran into some old friends we had met last time we were in Hermanus. We took photos by the sea and found the liveliest, cutest french bulldog pup who ran up to using a ball of excitement.
Wednesday was by far my favourite. My parents went to play 18 holes of golf at the Hermanus gold course, so the dropped us off in town for a day of shopping, exploring and eating out. They dropped us off very early, at 7:30am so nothing except the Wimpy was open. We decided to have a cup of coffee and wait for the breakfast resturants to open up. We used our 30 minutes of free wifi and proceeded to laugh at the sesame street show they aired on the TV. We paid man made our way to The Burgundy, one of my favourite places for lunch in town, although I had never had breakfast there before. I ordered a carb free version of the eggs Benedict, which had 2 big brown mushrooms instead of an english muffin. I enjoyed it, although if you are looking for a proper eggs benedict I wouldn’t recommend it. The sauce did;t have the traditional mayonnaise tang to it and was quite thin, so they probably didn’t whisk it over heat for long enough. The view from the Burgundy is great, so if the weather is good you must chose an outside table. You can see part of the town and the old harbour and you look out over the ocean. In whale season you might be lucky enough to see a small pod breaching.
At around 9:30am we walked into a street which houses one of my favourite stores there: The Hermnaus Factory shop. It has everything from clothing to bedding to baking stuff. There’s an upstairs where they even sell branded stuff for super cheap, because they buy in bulk. We didn’t buy anything but we spent a considerable amount of time there. We then walked to the other smaller shops in town. I bought a gorgeous beach bag, a plain white tee, some henna and a fake septum ring.
For lunch we headed into a new place called Betty Blue. We were pleasantly surprised and The food there was absolutely amazing. I have written a separate blog post about it, which you can check out here:
Seriously, if you go to Hermanus you have to stop by this place, even if it is just for one of their legendary juices; and if you’re feeling lazy, you can even order a takeaway! We met my bestie’s boyfriend and his best friend for lunch and had a wonderful time together.
My parents picked us up around 14:00 and then dropped us off at Onrus beach at 20:00 for a bonfire with our friends. It was such a social event and I would really recommend creating your own bonfire on Onrus, or joining one. We started out with about 5 people and by the end of the night 20+ had joined us. There is a campsite nearby and so anyone from friends of friends to strangers pitched up, which was great because you get to know people that way for the next time you come to this little town. Everyone there is super friendly in a very genuine way, which surprised me because in my town you don’t get a lot of that.
On Thursday, our last night in Hermanus, we decided to have dinner at Fabio’s, my favourite dinner restaurant in town. It’s nothing fancy, just an Italian restaurant, but the food and service is always really good. I was pleasantly surprised that they had added a banting pizza base to their menu (made from cauliflower). It was really tasty, and I couldn’t tell the difference between that and a normal pizza. The other thing that was great is that it was the same size as the other normal pizzas, which you don’t often find with cauliflower based pizzas. After dinner, we met up with some of our friends at Jax. We played pool and chatted, and it was just a really enjoyable way to end this little trip of ours.
Here are a few places I would recommend if you are in Hermanus:
I hope you all enjoyed the post
Until the next time

P.S. WARNING!!! Don't swim in the lagoon at Onrus beach, there are often reports of the water being contaminated and every now and then some mystery green, red or yellow foam tends to float on the surface. Also, I have myself seen dogs relieving themselves in the lagoon, so the lagoon itself isn't sanitary, but the ocean is okay.
