For the last while, ugly shoes have been trending. Ugly is the new pretty, and the chunkier and clunkier the better. From fashion bloggers and a-list celebs to models and designers, this trend is making it's way around and it's going to stick around for a while!
This trend has been present in a lot of summer ootd's around Instagram and other fashion blogs in the form of sandals. Before, summer was always for dainty sandals, feminine flip flops and the occasional colourful wedge sandal. Now it's all about the bulk. While sandals might still carry dainty prints, the buckles and soles are thick and chunky. Where flat forms were unseen, now they are the norm.
Ugly shoes aren't only for more daring outfits - I often have seen people wearing them with dainty white sundresses to add a twist to boring summer fashion. Ugly shoes also look great when paired with athleisure inspired bomber jackets. The great thing about 'ugly' shoes is that they don't have to make your outfit look ugly, in fact they do quite the opposite - especially when they are paired with an exceptionally beautiful sundress or perfectly tailored pants, and they can make your slightly fancier outfit a little more casual and day-appropriate.
Luckily, ugly shoes aren't always just for summer. You can wear them all year round. Loafers and 'grandma' shoes are perfect for winter, and incorporating the menswear trend is always a winner. Metallic shades and holographic materials are no longer for the bravest stylists, and unusual fabric is easy to wear for everyone! Ugly shoes can be incorporated into any wardrobe simply because they don't go with anything, so they go with everything (I hope that makes sense).
Heels like the ones above are great when paired with sheer black stockings and a textured mini-skirt in the winter and if you're still apprehensive about this trend, a neutral colour is the best place to start although soon you may be reaching for those contrasting colour combos that you once dreaded! Obviously there will be shoes to stay away from which will just never suffice - Crocs being the main contender (but if that's your thing, then just do it anyways, fashion isn't about sticking to the rules!).
So keep your shoes ugly to keep your outfits pretty! Until next time.
